About Me

I’m a bicycle mechanic. It’s the closest thing I have to an official title, and I like saying it. Mechanic. It means that I have a specialized body of knowledge, and it implies a level of competence. This is accurate, and I am delighted to be able to apply the label to myself.

On a human level, I hesitate to apply such a confident and concise label. I see myself as a pipe dreamer. While I am prone to fantasize and obsess about abstract ideas, I suspect that I often miss simple truths that others see plainly. I am unwilling to settle for a homogenized version of a world view. I aim to have more questions than answers about our universe. I believe that humans can benefit from taking the time to understand each others points of view. I’m an existentialist. I’m also smart enough to realize that I’m not as smart as I wish I was.

I’m 28 years old. I might decide to finish college if bicycles lead me down a dead end path. For now it looks like my career path might be found on two wheels. Bicycles are the hobby that became a job when I needed one. Now I want to carve out my own niche in this industry. Will I? Maybe.

I’m just a bicycle mechanic now, but I’d like to design and import frames under my own name. Takes money. I’d also like to lead bicycle camping tours. Takes time. I don’t want to be just a bicycle mechanic forever. I’d like more money and I’d like to have absolute control over the products that I put my effort into. I also fantasize about dropping out of society to increasing degrees. I’m confident that I’m going in the right direction, but I still feel like I’m growing up and learning how to be human.

I’m goofy. I can be sincere, but a majority of the sentences that come out of my mouth are an attempt at humor. I don’t wait until I have something funny to say - I just make constant jokes, and once in awhile one ends up being okay. My typical idea of funny is to state a ridiculous idea as a fact, or to suggest an abstract idea as a viable plan.

I try to be friendly and see the good in other humans. I can be remarkably patient at times, and at other times an insignificant occurrence can make me explode or despair. A rainy day in winter can be difficult medicine.

In trying to describe what makes me unique, I’ve actually just listed typical aspects of humans in general. That might be a higher level of accuracy than I was aiming for.

My name is Chris and I like bicycles.
